**The Extraordinary Life and Death of 25 year old millionaire William Borden

In 1904 young William Borden graduated from a high school in Chicago. As heir to the Borden Dairy fortune, he was already worth millions. As a graduation present, his parents gave the 16-year-old Borden a trip to sail around the world. As he traveled through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, he sensed a growing burden to reach the lost in nations cut off from the gospel. Finally, Borden wrote home to his parents, expressing, “I'm going to give my life to prepare for the mission field.” One of his friends was completely shocked, letting Borden know he felt he was "throwing himself away as a missionary." When Borden heard that, he wrote two words in the front of his Bible: “No reserve.”

Even though Borden was fabulously wealthy, he arrived at Yale University in 1905 attempting to appear like any other freshman student. But soon, his classmates noticed something unique about Borden. One of them wrote: “He came to college far ahead, spiritually, of any of us. He had already given his heart in full surrender to Christ. We learned to lean on him and find in him a strength that was solid as a rock, just because of this settled purpose and consecration.” Another entry in Borden’s journal explained what the other students were seeing in his life. It simply said: “Say 'no' to self and 'yes' to Jesus every time.”

During his first year at Yale, Borden started something that impacted the entire campus for Christ. He challenged a friend to pray with him before breakfast each day, and soon a second joined them, and a third, and a fourth, and others. One of the participants shared, “William would read to us from the Bible, show us something that God had promised and then proceed to claim the promise with assurance.” By the end of his first year, 150 freshmen were meeting for prayer and Bible study each week in small groups. By the time Borden was a senior, one thousand of Yale's 1,300 students were gathering every week for this purpose. He had divided the classes up into smaller groups and assigned key student leaders to reach out and witness to a certain number, with a goal of extending salvation to every student. Borden and his leaders would go over every name and ask, “Who will take this student?” When the name of a hardened or “incorrigible” student came up and no one wanted to take them on, Borden would chime in by saying, “Put him down to me.” Young Borden’s ministry extended beyond Yale, as he sought to help widows, orphans, cripples, and drunks in the area, forming the Yale Hope Mission.

Borden felt the missionary call to reach out to one of the hardest to reach people groups of all, the Muslim Kansu in China. Once that goal was in sight, Borden never questioned his destiny and consistently challenged his classmates to consider missionary service, even hosting a huge student missionary conference at Yale. Even though Borden was very involved on campus and served as President of Phi Beta Kappa there at Yale, he chose not to join a fraternity. One student said, “Although he was a millionaire, William seemed to realize always that he must be about his Father's business, and not wasting time in the pursuit of amusement.” He never even owned an automobile, and when others asked why, he would casually respond, “Because I can't afford one.” But during his undergraduate years at Princeton he gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars to Christian ministries. Once he graduated, Borden turned down several lucrative career opportunities. After one especially tempting job offer, he went home and wrote two more words in his Bible: “No retreat.”

Borden instead went on to complete a masters degree at Princeton Seminary, and then newspapers across the nation published articles about this young millionaire who raised his own support to go to China as a missionary. It was 1913 and the entire country was fascinated by this wealthy and gifted young man who turned his back on affluence and comfort in America to risk everything and go to China. On his way there, he stopped first in Cairo, Egypt to study Arabic because he was going to be reaching Muslims. While there, he contracted spinal meningitis and died a few weeks later in a hospital room—all alone.

When news was cabled back to America that 25-year-old William Whiting Borden was dead “a wave of sorrow went round the world . . . Borden not only gave away his wealth, but himself, in a way so joyous and natural that it seemed a privilege rather than a sacrifice” wrote his biographer. Many people though, thought that Borden had thrown his life away. He could have had everything, but instead met an untimely death of his own doing. As his associates were packing up his belongings to ship them back to the states for his burial, they found his Bible next to his hospital bed. In the front cover, underneath the words “No reserve” and “No retreat,” they were astonished to see the dying Borden had also scrawled two final words: “No regrets.”

No reserve, no retreat, no regrets.

Although William Borden’s life appeared to end prematurely, he had accomplished everything God had planned for him. In his heart of hearts the young 25 year old millionaire missionary must have reconciled his destiny there on his death bed and made peace with God—and himself. How about you and I? There are a hundred things we could do with our lives, a hundred pursuits for which we could exchange it. But how many of them will enable you to say at the end of your life, “No reserve, no retreat, no regrets”?

Great Britain’s Derek Redmond grimaces as he is helped down the track by his father, Jim, in the 400 meters at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

But it was other barriers Redmond climbed over and around that defined his legacy, during the semifinals of the men’s 400 meters inside Estadi Olimpic de Monjuic at the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona. The International Olympic Committee calls it “one of the most inspirational moments in Olympic history.”

Redmond was in the stadium as his son, Derek, settled into the starting blocks in lane 5.

Derek, the British national record holder at 400 meters, had missed the 1988 Olympics in Seoul when, 90 seconds before his opening heat, he felt a twinge in his Achilles tendon and withdrew. But he had been part of England’s victorious 4x400 relay team at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, upsetting the mighty Americans. He won his preliminary and quarterfinal heats in Barcelona. The five surgeries were behind him. This was his time.

In the moments before the starting gun, he privately dedicated the race to his father, the driving force behind his career, his crutch through the endless bouts of rehab, his best friend.

It was his right hamstring, and he crumbled to the orange urethane track as the rest of the field rounded the far turn, tore down the home stretch and crossed the finish line. Derek looked up and saw a stretcher crew approaching.

No way he was getting on it.

He stood and began half-hobbling, half-skipping down the back stretch and into the final turn, dragging his right leg behind him, swerving but staying in lane 5 as the 65,000 inside Estadi Olimpic de Monjuic turned their attention from the seven finishers to the solitary figure hobbling in lane 5, pain etched across his face.

Everything I had worked for was finished,” he said later. “I hated everybody. I hated the world. I hated hamstrings. I hated it all … Then I felt a hand on my shoulder.”

It was his father, who had charged down the aisle, evaded security, scaled barriers, jumped on the track, evaded more security in his blue shorts, white T-shirt and “Just Do It” cap. He wrapped Derek’s left arm over his shoulder and whispered into his ear: “You don’t have to do this.”

Derek: “I’ve got to finish.”

Jim: “OK, we started your career together, so we’re going to finish this race together.”

Derek broke down and buried his head in his father’s shoulder, bawling. Jim kept them moving, walking arm in arm, staying in lane 5. The crowd roared louder.

An overzealous meet official approached and tried to usher them off the track. Jim shooed him away. They kept going. Another in a green jacket approached and left. They kept going, J Redmond & Son.

.. Before 5 meters to finish the dad said  " Go ahead and finish.

And Derek finished the race....

Glory of God is greatest when we are at weakest.

Glory of God will be great when you put your head on Jesus' shoulders and going forward by His grace...

Many years back God spoke to His servant P.S Samuel while in Raipur.

“You go to Ladakh and speak my Word there. Plant a church there…”

He packed his bag by faith and reached the railway station. Not even a single paise in the hand. After sometime the train arrived.

It is the train by which he must travel to his destination. But it wasn’t moving. The servant of God understood that the train had some technical problem.

After quite sometime there comes a man running to him.

“Jesus told me to take the ticket and give you.” Moreover, he gave an additional Rs 500. (Those days Rs 500 was a big amount).

Samuel boarded the train with the ticket and the money. The moment he placed his bag under the seat the train started its journey with the whistle.

The train will wait for the one who lives by faith. The sun and the moon stand still for the one who live by faith.

This day let us make a small step of faith. Let us stop the life by sight.

“My righteous shall live by faith”

The Lord is coming…

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.  This is what the ancients were commended for. Hebrews 11:1-2

*"At the end of 1961, a young exchange student studying at the Bible College of Wales in Swansea, was on his way home, when he decided to take an unguided sightseeing tour of London.

As he walked, he came across a house with a nameplate on the front that said “George Jeffreys”. He wondered if it could be the “great George Jeffreys who had founded the Elim Pentecostal churches in Ireland and England” and whom he had read so much about.”

This is how he tells the rest of the story:

“There I rang the bell. A lady opened the door. ‘Pardon my intrusion, ma’am. Does George Jeffreys live here who was the famous firebrand evangelist I have heard so much about?’ ‘Yes, he does’.
‘May I see him?’
‘No. Under no circumstances.’
She had hardly said no when I heard a deep voice from within the house say, ‘Let the young man come in.’

…I stepped forward, took his hand and introduced myself. I told him I had a call of God on my life to be an evangelist and to preach the gospel in Africa. That I had been to college in Swansea (Bible College in Wales) and was now returning to Germany.
What happened next was extraordinary. All of a sudden, he took me by my shoulders and fell to his knees, pulling me to the floor with him. He placed his hands on my head and began to bless me as a father blesses a son, as Abraham blessed Isaac, who blessed Jacob, and on and on.

The room seemed to light up with the glory of God as he poured out his prayer over me. I do not remember the words with which he blessed me, but I do remember their effect. My body felt electrified, tingling with divine energy.
After about half an hour he finished. I stood up and helped him to his feet. He seemed very frail. We said goodbye. The lady came and escorted me away. He could hardly stand. Nor could I, for different reasons.” That young man went on to become one of the greatest  evangelists of his generation.

His name was Reinhard Bonnke. (when he got off the train in Germany, Bonnke was told by his dad that G.Jeffreys had just died).

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth... Acts 1:8

Jesus the Shepherd of my soul ....2024

‭‭ He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young.Isaiah‬ ‭40:11‬

1) Shepherd is lifting us.
He gathers up His sheep in His arms and carries them. Thank you Jesus for lifting me up with Your nail pierced hands.

2) Shepherd is loving us.
"and carries them close to His heart; "
What a loving Shepherd we have. We can hear the heart beat of God. ‭‭
One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him. John 13:23
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. John 10:11

3) The Shepherd is leading us.

He leads us in the paths of righteousness for His Name sake.
He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. John 10:3, 4

‭‭In the New year of 2024 let us sing from our heart to God the Shepherd of our Soul..

🎵🎵🎵

Shepherd of my soul I give You full control

Wherever You may lead I will follow

I have made the choice to listen for Your voice

Wherever You may lead I will go

Be it in a quiet pasture or by a gentle breeze

The shepherd of my soul is by my side

Should I face a mighty mountain or a valley dark and deep

The shepherd of my soul will be my guide

Be it in a quiet pasture or by a gentle breeze

The shepherd of my soul is by my Side

should I face a mighty mountain or a valley dark and deep

The shepherd of my soul will be my guide
