*Rejected by Men, Welcomed by the King

Mephibosheth’s life was marked by tragedy—and rejection.

He lost his father Jonathan, his grandfather Saul, and other family members in war. Then, at just five years old, he was dropped by his nurse and became crippled in both feet.

Born into a royal family, yet his life no longer looked royal.

He ended up in Lo-Debar,(meaning place of no pasture) far from the palace, far from the throne, far from everything he once could have hoped for.

When he finally stood before David, he called himself a “dead dog.”

What a picture of a broken and rejected man!

But one day, everything changed.

David asked:

“Is there still anyone… to whom I may show the kindness of God?”

The rejected one was remembered.

Mephibosheth was brought out of Lo-Debar and brought to the king’s table.

Rejected—but accepted.

Forgotten—but remembered.

Broken—but welcomed.

Lonely—but given a place.

What grace!

And this is the beauty of the gospel.

Perhaps you have experienced rejection—because of your past, your failures, your weakness, or the opinions of people.

But Jesus says:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

The world may say, “You are not wanted.”

But grace says, “Come to the table.”

The world may remember your failure, but Jesus receives you with love.

And through Christ, the rejected find acceptance, the broken find grace, and the lonely find belonging.

His banner over us is love.

And one day we will say:

“I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

So let the rejected heart rejoice.

Let the broken heart sing:

“Amazing grace!”

Love beyond words.

Grace beyond measure.

Glory, glory to Jesus!
